The sport

What Olympic rifle shooting is, and why it is harder than it looks.

Ten metres. A pellet the width of a pencil. A ten ring you could hide under a grain of rice. Then do it forty times without moving.

Origins

On the programme since the first Games

Shooting was at the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896 and has missed only two Games since. The air rifle event arrived at Los Angeles in 1984 and has been the sport’s purest test ever since: no wind, no light, no distance to judge. Just the shooter, the rifle and a target ten metres away.

The sport is governed by the ISSF, founded in 1907. In Slovakia it runs through the Slovenský strelecký zväz, which selects the national team and publishes every result.

The match

Forty shots. Fifty minutes.

A youth qualification is forty shots in fifty minutes, fired as four series of ten. Seniors shoot sixty in seventy five. The top eight go to a final of twenty four shots where the lowest score is eliminated two shots at a time until one is left. There is no second attempt and no team mate to pass to.

Standing, unsupported

Nothing to lean on and no sling. The rifle sits on the support hand, the elbow on the hip, and the body stacks so bone carries four and a half kilos instead of muscle.

The training

Built before the first shot

Hours of holding the rifle without firing, until the position is automatic. Dry firing to groove the trigger. Core and leg strength so the frame does not sag by shot thirty. Breathing drills. Watching the sight picture on a screen that records every wobble. Then the live shots, logged and compared, series after series, week after week.

Game time

A full match. Forty shots in four series of ten, scored exactly as the sport scores them, against Hayden’s 397.9 from the championship.

How it works

The ring is the real front sight. It drifts like a beginner’s hold and gets worse the longer you wait on a shot. Tap the target, or hit Fire, when the ring sits on the red ten. The trigger adds its own error. Ten shots make a series, four series make the match, and the clock runs from your first shot.

    The story

Three countries, one rifle, and a marksman in the family eighty four years before him.

    2026

    Košice. The title.

Forty shots, standing, unsupported, on 17 May 2026 at the Slovak Youth Championships. 397.9, first place by four and a tenth, and a place on the Slovak national team. He is sixteen. The Olympics is the target, and he knows exactly how far away it is: the published qualifying score for men at Los Angeles 2028 is 613.0 over sixty shots, and that number is on his wall.

Dún Laoghaire harbour on Dublin Bay
    2010

    Born in Ireland

Dún Laoghaire, on the waterfront south of Dublin, was the first of three homes. Nobody in the house was shooting. The flag that would end up on his jacket was Slovak, and the family had not got there yet. What Ireland gave him was a start by the sea and a surname that a results list in Košice now prints with an accent in it.

    Learning to stop moving

Load, raise, settle. The hold narrows, the breath goes, and somewhere inside a second and a half the trigger releases itself. Then thirty nine more. The only thing separating a good match from an average one is how little changes between the first shot and the last. Slovakia taught him the sport. ŠSK Podhradová and Anton Belek are teaching him the rest.

    A 1942 army marksmanship range
    1942

    In the blood

Sarsfield Patrick Smiddy, Hayden’s great great uncle, was born in Cobh in 1905, enlisted in the US Army in August 1942, and on 10 October that year qualified as a marksman with the M-1 rifle. He went through Sicily, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno. In 2026 the Army corrected his burned file and confirmed six awards, among them the Marksman Badge. Hayden is the one who went looking for the record.
